On a fresh spring morning, residents from across Heron Island rolled up their sleeves and got to work on our annual maintenance day — and what a difference a few hours makes.
The island was looking its very best by the time everyone had finished. The famous boat planters at the entrance were replanted with a riot of spring colour – a warm welcome for anyone arriving on the island.
Down at the moorings, a dedicated team spent the morning scrubbing and pressure washing the pontoons and walkways, making them clean, safe and ready for the boating season.
Elsewhere, residents were busy clipping and shaping the hedgerows and bushes along the pathways, keeping the island’s green corridors tidy and well-presented. On “the spit,” a team tackled the re-mortaring of the cobbled paving slabs, which had been loosened over winter — painstaking work that will keep the area safe and looking great for years to come.
And of course, the picnic benches by the river were spruced up too, ready for residents to enjoy the riverside as the weather improves.
A huge thank you to every resident who gave up their time. Community days like this only work because people care — about where they live, and about their neighbours. Whether you spent an hour or the whole morning, your contribution makes Heron Island the special place it is.
